Bath Christmas Market: The Festive Delight or Seasonal Disaster?
Ah, the Bath Christmas Market. Every year it rolls around, bringing festive cheer, glimmers of fairy lights, and enough controversy to rival a Love Island reunion (At least among Bath folk). Regularly voted one of the most popular Christmas markets in the UK, it’s the seasonal pride of the city—or at least that’s what the marketing team will tell you. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a cacophony of complaints about crowds, chaos, and questionable mulled wine prices. So, is it a festive must-visit or a seasonal circus? Let’s dive in.
The Pros: Festive Cheer and Boosting Bath
Let’s start with the good stuff, because it’s Christmas and I’m feeling generous. And when I say it’s Christmas, I mean that term lightly, it’s barely past mid November! There’s no denying that the Bath Christmas Market shines a spotlight on the city. Tourists flock here from far and wide, breathing life (and a lot of cash) into local businesses. Hotels get booked up, restaurants are heaving, and shopkeepers no longer have to squint at their sales totals in despair. For those who rely on tourism, it’s a golden opportunity to end the year on a high.
And then there’s the atmosphere. Sure, it’s busy, but it’s also twinkly. The wooden chalets, the carol singers, the smell of cinnamon wafting through the air—it’s basically the Love Actually of Christmas markets. If you can momentarily ignore the fact that you’re paying £7 for a sausage roll and fighting off a stranger for a mediocre bauble, there’s a certain charm to it all.
The Cons: Nightmare Before Christmas
Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room—or rather, the herd of elephants crammed into Abbey Churchyard ( and please don’t be offended by the term elephants). The Bath Christmas Market is busy. And I don’t mean “oh, there’s a bit of a queue for the mulled wine.” I mean shoulder-to-shoulder, push-your-way-through-the-crowd busy. It’s the kind of place where you’ll lose both your festive spirit and your will to live after 20 minutes. You will also find after 20 minutes you will sometimes be lucky to have walked more than 20 meters!
Getting into Bath during market season is its own level of Dante’s Inferno. Whether you’re driving down Walcot Street waiting for a Podium space to free up or crammed onto a train with half of Somerset, the journey alone is enough to turn you into Scrooge. And once you arrive and edge ever closer to Abbey Courtyard prepare to shuffle through the streets like you’re in a very polite zombie apocalypse.
Then there’s the cost. A visit to the Bath Christmas Market isn’t so much a festive outing as it is a financial commitment. By the time you’ve had a mulled wine, bought a candle that smells vaguely of gingerbread, and sampled a mince pie, you’re down £20 and wondering why you didn’t just stay home with a box of Celebrations and The Holiday. As someone who spends a lot of time visit cities abroad and particularly London, I am use to tourist prices, but still.
Is It All Worth It?
So, here’s the question: Is the Bath Christmas Market worth the hassle? It really depends on your perspective. If you’re a local, you’re probably muttering about how it clogs up the city and ruins your peaceful shopping trips- completely fair. If you’re a tourist, you’re snapping selfies with a chalet and raving about how “quaint” everything is- also fair in the influencer age. The truth is somewhere in between. Yes, it’s crowded, yes it’s probably overpriced, and stressful, but it’s also a huge draw for visitors and a boost for the local economy and our amazing city.
Final Thoughts: Naughty or Nice?
At the end of the day, the Bath Christmas Market is a microcosm of Christmas itself: chaotic, expensive, and slightly overwhelming, but also full of moments that can feel magical if you’re in the right mood (and not hangry). Whether you love it or loathe it, there’s no denying it’s a staple of the season and once those sheds start to go up you know what’s coming.
I feel like it’s a real tough one to call. Ive had this discussion about London Borough Market. I love the place, I regularly frequent a bakery there that recently went viral on social media (and rightly so). I now have to que for an hour to just to get my fill of Crème Brule Doughnuts! But as much as I’m a little mad at the queue, I can’t help but be happy for the bakery making lots of money and enjoying their moment in the social media spotlight. I guess I have the same feeling about the Christmas market. Yes its busy, yes it’s become overcrowded and can be a pain, I only hope that small local businesses around and in it make some good money and enjoy the festive spotlight.
So, should you brave the crowds and give it a go? Or should you stay home, pop on a Christmas jumper, and avoid the madness altogether? I’ll leave you with this festive conundrum: If Santa were real (who’s to say he isnt), would he fight his way through the market—or would he stick to Amazon Prime?
Merry Christmas all, even if it is only November!
